The food you are providing is not giving enough Happiness per second. Next time you feed you pet make sure the combat log is open. After starting feed pet it will say "(Pet Name) gains feed pet" followed by how much happiness gained this will go on for several seconds depending on the lvl of food provided.
The max Happiness gained per sec is 35 and if its around 18 its time to find new food to give your pet. By using high lvl food you can increase the amount of time you pet is green, personally i never let mine go below green the +Damage is nice.
Try using the Feed-O-Matic addon it will make feeding your pet a lot easier. It automatically scans all the food in you inventory and feed you pet for you. It will always use the best food available and will never feed your pet quest items.
Tips:
Don't forget that moving or attacking or being attack stops the feed affect. So for the best benefit make sure you stand still till you pet has finished eating.
Feed-O-Matic is activated by left clicking on the Happiness icon. (Options is right click)
There is no penalty for over feeding so feed you pet often.

World of Warcraft is a superb game and is an invigorating experience for anyone who plays it. If you are looking for a game that will challenge you, engage you and reward you then it is the perfect title. It could even be said that playing it will make you smarter, as the game asks so much of you that you can’t help but grow as you play it.
World of Warcraft is a vast, long-lasting game that will occupy you for many hours. It contains almost infinite tasks and objectives. It is not easy to complete it, and in some ways the game is an open-ended experience. The closest thing the game has to an ending is its 60th level, and for you to reach that point requires a great deal of effort. It is an absorbing experience and will give you a thorough mental workout.

1. The level of your food makes a difference. Make sure you are using the highest level food you can feed your pet. Feed often.
2. The pets loyalty is likely the largest factor is how quickly he becomes unfriendly. Build loyalty by questing and keeping your pet topped off. Refer to #3.
3. Try not to let your pet die. If your pet is tanking, use the passive option to allow the pet to run back to you. Place a freeze trap to trap your prey while you bandage your pet. If you need more time, ice trap again until you have sufficient pet health to continue the battle. Nothing pisses off you pet more that letting him die. "What kind of best-friend are you?" :)
