Minecraft Nether portal In mid air?

Question

Im on a multiplayer server with my friend hosting it.
I built a portal to the nether and went through, only to recognize it had spawned me into mid air! I have a sea of lava beneath me, and I cant get anywhere. I dont want to build a 'bridge' to get to other places, too risky.
Does anyone know how to NOT spawn in mid air? I've tried building different portals on different locations. :/

go into the nether and just break the portal, destroy an obsidian block or get a ghast to blow it up. then just build a new portal in the normal world a bit far away from the original doesnt have to be to far but the portal should spawn on land in the nether

I don't think that you can go to the Nether in Multiplayer servers.

Lol just use /tp (your friends in game name) and you will teleport to him, the air thing must be a glitch
