Most pets are ones that only hunters can get. Those would be the beasts of the world which hunters then tame. Warlocks have minions, for that matter.

If you're not a hunter, then the only pets your toon can really get are ones that you buy... little things that follow you around but don't help in combat. Undercity sells roaches, Orgrimmar has a snake vendor (which are Horde, there, but Horde's what I'm more familiar with)... in Auction House there is a 'pets' tab where you can buy things if you just want something to follow you around now.

You'll only be able to get companion/vanity pets as a mage or warrior. These can be purchased at various vendors and on the auction house although they're generally over-priced on the AH. Engineering does get a couple of temporary combat pets that are trinkets such at the Battle Chicken and the Mechanical Dragonling. Engineering also gets the Mechanical Squirrel non-combat pet. Jewelcrafting also gets a couple of temporary combat pet trinkets.

Eventually the mage does get a water elemental at higher levels. It's not exactly a pet.

Hunter’s get a quest to learn how to tame beasts at level 10. Once this is completed, hunters can tame many different beasts as a pet. Hunter’s are considered the primary “pet class” in WoW.

Warlocks get a pet (called a minion) around level 2 from a quest, and later on get different pets from different quests (like the voidwalker at level 10).

Mages can temporarily summon water elementals if they it’s in their spec.

Priests can summon a shadow fiend that attacks and helps restore mana.

Non-combat pets can be bought at a variety of places. For example, near the human starting area, there is a “cat lady” who you can buy cats from. These pets follow you around, but cannot help you fight…they are for looks only.

Only hunters can have (combat) pets, which they get at lvl 10.

if you're a different class you can have a companion pet that follows you around but doesn't fight, which you buy from mobile vendors

As Skeletor reported, there's a expertise on the Beastmastery expertise tree referred to as "Bestial Wrath" which will enhance the wear and tear and tear a puppy can inflict with the help of 50% for 18 seconds. even as it really is in result, the puppy won't be able to be feared a great deal surprised or trapped. even as "Bestial Wrath" is in result, hte puppy will enhance in length and turns pink.
