I wouldn't get your hopes up. Prob Traveler's Tundra Mammoth, it's actually a three person mount. Though I suspect the driver was level 40 or more...

It's a level 40+ mount (all mammoth mounts are) bought in the city of Dalaran, located in Northrend, a zone for people mid 60s and more, and costs $20,000 gold (a few thousand less with rep)... One of the costliest vendor mounts actually. To even have it at level 40 would require the owner to already have a higher character that was able to go there and enough money to buy it, though before account-wide mounts that didn't used to be the case and had to be bought on each character when they got high enough.

Sorry for the let down, but if you upgrade you can eventually have it. Even if you just got the battle chest and never bothered with Cata and Mists the battle chest would give you the Wrath expansion which would be enough to get to Dalaran where the vendor is.

Honestly I've been playing for a few years and none of my characters have that mount yet either because I haven't been willing to fork over that kind of gold yet, too many other things they needed to spend it on. Soon maybe. If I can bear to give up that much. lol

There are 3 mammoth style mounts that allow more than one person on them and are available to both factions.

The first is the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth, a light brown colored mammoth and the easiest to obtain. It costs 20000 gold from Mei Francis in Dalaran which is in Northrend, a level 70-80 area but can be accessed at any level but is not recommended.

The next most likely way you are going to get your mammoth is the Grand Black War Mammoth, which is a black mammoth as you you would expect from the name. It drops off any of the 4 bosses in the level 80 Vault of Archavon raid with a 1-2% drop rate per week each. This raid requires you have access to Wintergrasp and are at least level 80 to enter, but will not be able to be done alone at level 80. It easily done at level 90, the current level cap. Though this method is all on very thin luck, it is the cheapest and easiest.

The final multi seater mount is the Grand Ice Mammoth, which is white in color. This is for sale by the Sons of Hodir quartermaster and costs 10000 gold (cheaper when your reputation with them is higher) and requires you to be exalted with them. This will take a long time (a week or two) and will still have a price (but not so expensive) but it is also not reliant on luck. If you are determined and patient, this would be the smartest and rarest of the 3 mounts to get.

There are also single seater mammoths that are much cheaper/easier to get, like the black war mammoth which requires a measly 2000 honor points to purchase from the Wintergrasp quartermaster.

All of which requires the full game at least up to Wrath of the Lich King, which cannot be owned without Burning Crusade (which I think all comes free with the original game these days).

Good luck!

There is actually a few types of Mammoths'.

Both of them you need to have a level 80 and be able to pay for it.

1. The Traveler's Tundra Mammoth: A mount worth 20k Gold, that has repairs and a vendor. 17k gold if Exalted.

2. The Grand Ice Mammoth: A mount that can only carry 2 people. It's worth 10k or 12k Not exalted, but you have to be exalted to buy it. You have to do a series of quests to obtain it. Once exalted it should only cost 10k, 8, or 7k. (Can't remember)

The quests to get exalted only took me 1 or 2 days.

The mount you saw, the level 20 was RIDING it, he didnt own it, he wasnt controlling the mammoth.

You can only get the best mounts at maximum level, which is level 90 on MOP...

you wont be able to get it until you pay for the full version of the game. you see, mounts are spread across all the characters you make so the level 20 you saw with the 2 seater mount will have bought it with one of his other characters who is probably level 90 or something. im afraid to say that all the coolest mounts you can get when you reach the maximum level. sorry.

Blizzard has announced that the typical Mount level requirement will likely be reduced to degree 30 to help players degree rapid and get to situations rapid (equivalent to Scarlet Mon. For Alliance) The Epic land mount will keep the equal as equal for Flying mount's all of this will be within the subsequent patch.
