My PS3 40gb is not reading any disc and I find this quite common for many ps3 owners. From what I know, this is due to the blu ray lens failure and this costs $150 for sony to fix it without warranty. I bought this on ebay and I'm wondering
1. will this work if I can borrow someone's receipt and send it to Sony?
2. Does the receipt indicate serial number?
3. Has anyone done this before(if this works)? Or any other suggestions? Can anyone kindly let me borrow the receipt if this works?
4. Is replacing the lens($70 for lens) myself an easier way out?

Thank you guys and any input is very much appreciated!!!!

You would need more information than the reciept to prove warranty - and replacing the lens yourself might just break it worse. I would just pay up, myself.

the warranty is determined by the serial number. To be blunt you took this risk when you bought a a PS3 on Ebay a lot of people sell them when they're just starting to show signs of falling apart and are out of warranty so they can get a new one with the money they made. i think you've been had.Unfortunately sending fir a repair is your ONLY way out. not to worry though they have a great repair service. Good luck. hope I was able to help. or if it was recently enough contact the person you bought it from and ask them for the money for a repair,

The same thing happened to me. I sold my broken ps3 to some guy, and bought an 80gb. No one can give you a reciept, then check the serial numbers on the ps3 and the reciept to see if they are the same.

Buy an 80gb. Do it. Saves alot of trouble.

I doubt it will work man, serial # will not match. I would recomend saving 150 and sending it in because if you spend money to diy and you mess it up, your out that money and your still in the same position...
