How do you become a Nobody?

In the video game Kingdom Hearts II (Square Enix/Disney), there are a group of characters called the Organization XIII, which consist of thirteen members called Nobodies who have no heart. How did the members of the Organization become a Nobody?

A Nobody is what is left behind by those whose hearts have been consumed by Heartless. The first generic Nobodies are seen in Kingdom Hearts II, although members of Organization XIII and Naminé appeared as early as Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, but it was unknown they were Nobodies. They are made of body and soul.



Nobodies are born when a heart is swallowed by darkness and becomes a Heartless. They are the remaining parts left behind by the heart: the body, giving a Nobody form, and the soul, giving the Nobody life. However, only those with strong wills such as Sora are actually able to continue on as Nobodies. Those with the strongest wills manage to retain human forms with some slight changes to their appearance, while the rest possess malformed, barely humanoid appearances. Therefore, the more humanoid a Nobody, the more powerful it is. This is opposite the nature of the Heartless, whose form is more monstrous the stronger the original heart is (with the exception of Xehanort's Heartless, who for unknown reasons retained his human form).



All Nobodies, vanishing from the realm of light upon the loss of the heart, are born in a world in-between the realms of light and darkness, like Twilight Town or Castle Oblivion. However, because of this and their lack of hearts, they are shunned by both light and darkness, and do not truly exist.



Because of their missing hearts, Nobodies lack emotion. Although, some humanoid Nobodies pretend to possess emotions, fooling others as well as themselves. On the other hand, Nobodies manage to keep their memories of their former lives, but unusual Nobodies lack memories of their former selves. Such memories are the reason why they can pretend to have emotions. However, even though Nobodies don't have emotions, they can think and plan (as opposed to the Heartless, which simply act on instinct, with a few exceptions). Although it's never stated, the events of the Battle of 1000 Heartless implied that Nobodies are stronger than Heartless, since the Nobodies were able to easily overpower the Heartless. At the very least they are just as powerful, and the fact that they are much more intelligent than Heartless only heightens the threat they pose.

Bassicaly, a nobody is the 'shell' of a heartless, its former self. Its like a vessel, it has no soul, no heart, no nothing. Although a nobody is indeed whats 'left over' when a heartless is formed, it won't neccesarily look like the person did before becoming a heartless.



It should be noticed that a nobody is formed everytime someone becomes a heartless, but they don't always appear human. Those with weaker souls become the basic Nobodies, these are those silver jumpsuit guys. The stronger ones, however, retain their form, and their consioucness. They also retain memories of being a human.



These stronger nobodies have the absolute belief that they do have a heart, that they are, essentially, real. They are stronger, smarter, quicker, and wittier than the other nobodies, and lead the lesser ones. Organization XIII is the collaboration of these stronger nobodies. You mention in your question 'how did they become nobodies' well, simply, people with a strong soul, who became heartless, left a nobody. Eventually, these strong nobodies banded together and created the Organization. They wern't a group of people before, they never knew eachother until forming the organization.



An example of this is Roxas. Roxas is actually Sora's nobody, because in the first one Sora did, temporarily, become a heartless, and as such a nobody was created. As Soras soul was incredibally strong, his Nobody was 'born' with consioucness, smartness, e.t.c. who was Roxas. However, as Sora wa sonly a heartless for a short time, Roxas has no memories of being a human. Therefore, he has no way of knowing he is actually a nobody. Because he was this 'type' of nobody, he was initiated into Organisation XIII (Roxas is the thirteenth member) however he left to pursue a goal, which is why Axel tries to bring him back.

when a strong hearted person becomes a heartless then a nobody is created as the nobody is the shell that is left behind by a heartless, so the way the members became members are a very strong hearted person became a heartless then the nobody was created the difference to normal nobodys and the O13 is that the O13 are special nobodys who can plan, think and act like they have hearts.

The other answers pretty much said how does someone become a nobody, but you as Sora, or Roxas cannot become a nobody in the game.
