How many pets can a hunter have on World of Warcraft?

I would like to train a new pet, but don't want to lose the one I have. Are you allowed more than one? And if so, is there a limit and does the limit increase with your level?

You can have up to 5. You purchase 4 stable slots and can put pets in there plus you have your active one. But I want to warn you it gets a little expensive to have all those stable slots. Also there are rumors of this changing with Catalysm.
Here are the rumored Catalysm changes. As for me I am SUPER excited for them. :D
"Pet management will also change. Hunters will now have two types of attainable pets: active pets and stored pets. Hunters will be able to have up to three active pets (perhaps five for Beast Mastery specialized players) and will have the ability to switch among these pets any time they are out of combat, without going to town. They will also be able to have a large number of pets in storage at the stables. In order to swap a pet from active to passive, a hunter will still need to visit their local Stable Master. However, this should afford ample storage for the many Spirit Beasts wandering the lands of Azeroth."
More changes to hunters can be found on the site in my sources.

once you've completed the series of hunter pet training quests at lvl 10 you will receive a new spell beast taming in your spell book along with mend and feed pet. some avdice for you as a beginner hunter that most people fail to share with you. No matter how rare of a pet you get whatever pet you tame of a curtain class I.E. bear cat spider wolf it doesn't matter if it was a rare or elite it will have the same exact stats of the same class of beast that would be tamed at that level. if you want to have a stronger than normal pet at this point in the game the best thing for you to do is to tame a pet and keep that same pet for the rest of the game. the longer you have a pet the more training points you will earn over time with that pet and thus the more you can alter its stats. Like increasing its stamina armor dodge magic resists. make sure that you feed your pet to keep it as happy as possible for the first 20 levels to ensure that it does not abandon you. and also make sure its very happy before it levels you get more training points that way. now different pets offer you different talents. cats attack fast can dash and stealth. a stealth-ed cat is ideal for night elves. boars can charge like a warrior. bears can tank and are not at all picky about what you feed them like other pets. wolfs give your party a nice buff that increases physical damage for one attack every 30 seconds or something. Birds suck and they make a really annoying noise when they attack. Turtles make the best tanks they have a spell to reduce damage taken by 50%. Serpents have a ranged nature spell that leaves a sudle dot . Scorpion have a nature spell that stacks up to 5 times and each stack amplifies the dot. dragon hawks have fire breathe and can only be upgraded twice. wind serpents have a ranged nature spell attack with a cool down and id recommend it for a shot rotation. Gorillas have an AOE. Spiders are use less . so are crabs. if you have any hunter questions feel free to ask.

You can have more then one pet. You will have to stable your current pet with a stable master though, then go and tame the other pet you want. The stable master will hold up to 5 pets if memory serves me correct. You have to buy the stable slots though and they get more expensive the more you buy. I currently have a bear (for solo questing), a dinosaur (for dungeons), a spider (for pvp), and a ravager just because it looks crazy lol. You can have the same amount of pets at low levels as you can at 80, you just have to buy the stable slots. Make sure you stable the pet FIRST before going to tame the other, there have been a couple times I forgot to do that, went all the way out to get the new pet and couldn't get it because I forgot to stable the current pet.

wow... I really don't know for sure since I haven't played a hunter for some time... but I think you can only have one. Some time ago I think there existed stable masters that would take in other pets, but I'm really not sure.
