Question:
Mass Effect 3: Vanguard Tips?
Q and A

After my first Mass Effect trilogy play through as a sentinel, I decided to complete my second play through of Mass Effect 3 as a Vanguard. Its a bit new for me, but I really like that it focuses heavily on biotics and combat. For I felt in Mass Effect 3, the Sentinel class was way to focused on tech skills than biotic skills.

From multiplayer experience with the N7 Slayer Vanguard, it is an amazing class to just run around and spam nova, slam, and biotic charge. It also seems easier to stay alive as a Vanguard in multiplayer than it is single player. Perhaps it is because I am getting used to it.

Any tips anybody can offer would be highly appreciated. Specifically on how to quickly kill enemies and not get seriously hurt. A friend who was watching me play says I play bit too much like a Sentinel. He says that I have gotten way to used to having tech armor. I believe he is right, for tech armor was key and a very important thing to me.

So again, just any tips on combat and fighting without the tech armor.

Thanks.

The vanguard is used as a tank. Since they have the Biotic Charge skill and when leveled all the way, it can recharge your barrier to full. When playing in a match, try to keep the attention on you most the time. As it will allow other team mates like an Infiltrator to work without worrying about dying. When I play the human vanguard, I usually level Biotic Charge, Nova and pretty much use that. I use a lightweight gun so my recharge speed is 200%. Find groups on enemies at the beginning of a round and charge into them. If you have cover you can use if you are about to die then Nova and take some out. By then you should be able to use Biotic charge again and repeat. If you don't think it is safe to Nova because it drains all your barrier and makes you vulnerable, get to Cover and wait for your barrier to recharge then Nova, then Biotic charge. By then your recharge sequence will change and you will be able to keep using Nova then Biotic Charge in sequence. Which will deal heavy damage. This is just one way to play the Human Vanguard, and all Vanguards are different so you will have to find a way to play the one you want. Just experiment a little and find a good sequence to use skills.

I completed ME3 on Insanity 3 times as Infiltrator, Vanguard, Adept, and folowing my experience, the best thing you should do is to stay alive and you have to take out some enemy until the NPC tell you to activate the Missiles. As a Vanguard, I recommend that you should carry a fully upgraded Predator pistol+Mag Upgrade+Hi Cal Barrel, and a fully upgraded M-300+spare ther clip+smart choke. If your trigger finger is fast enough, the Predator will act as a light weight, anti shield, high power SMG, and you wont suffer the way too long cool down. Generally after I took out several cannibal, brute, marauder, avoid the banshee ,and when I switched to my third hiding spot, I can be able to activate the second missile battery while tons of enemy still present. When you run you should always carry the hydra missile launcher with you if you did not use it. Nova and cryo ammo is essential for vanguard. pull will be the least upgrade you have to kill some enemy in order to get the job done.

Many of the Vanguard's powers are offensively-oriented, utilizing a high-risk, high-reward system. Vanguards can specialize in close ranged weapons or faster, harder hitting biotic powers.

While a solid weapon helps, one of the better ideas for a Vanguard is to keep recharge times low. Much of a Vanguard's success is contingent upon the ability to use powers in rapid succession, stringing various moves together to produce devastating effects.

It should be kept in mind that the Vanguard has no easy way to reduce shields aside from shooting them down or using a specific Nova evolution. An enemy protected by shields will mitigate most of the Vanguard's powers. As such, the Vanguard should coordinate with squad mates in order to deal with shields, with Overload being one of the easier ways of counteracting it.

Additionally, while the Vanguard is based on close-ranged ferocity and rapid usage of powers, charging into a disadvantageous position will often leave the Vanguard vulnerable to enemy fire. As such, the Vanguard must be cognizant of where a charge will leave them positioned in terms of their enemy's location.

However, despite the aforementioned shortcomings, a Vanguard with sufficient awareness and ability can become a devastating damage dealer on the battlefield, capable of annihilating large groups of enemies instantaneously in a ferocious, fantastic flurry of power combos and close ranged weapon blasts.
