How to enable cheats in Half Life 2?

Question

I'm trying to enable cheats on half life 2 ( All weapons, just to mess about) and i cant figure it out.
I'm not using steam, so I cant go to the properties in my games library, so don't say to do that.
I'm using a standalone copy of the game, Half Life 2 Episode 1.
Please help!

To enable Half-Life 2 cheat codes, first add "-console" to the command line parameter of the Half-Life 2 start menu icon. To do so, left click start menu then navigate to the Half-Life 2 shortcut icon, right click and select "properties". In the Target field add "-console" (w/o quotes) i.e. "C:\Program Files\Half-Life 2\hl2.exe" -console

Then start the game normally. While playing the game press tilde (~) to bring up the console. Enter the follow cheat codes for the desired effect.

Most lists I found had to do with changing the files but I did manage to find a few other suggestions. Hope something works for you.
