I love these games, ever sense Morrowind. So much that I went back and beat Arena and Daggerfall. Something I still don't get though is what the elder scrolls are themselves. A friend told me to read books in Oblivion that will tell me all about the lore, so i am wondering where these bokks might eb.

I know this is old but I can't rightly read this and not comment and I hope you come back to this and find a better understanding of what the Scrolls themselves truly are.

Short Answer: They contain myths, legends, and most importantly prophecy.

Longer Answer: The scrolls are not written any individual, but instead are written by the universe its self. They exist outside of time while still existing in "normal" reality. They are fluid and will not necessarily contain the same information forever. Mythic heroes (i.e. the protagonist from the games and a few other individuals) can help form the contents of the scrolls by performing mythopoeic acts that literally write and rewrite the scrolls to fit the legends they create. Heroic individuals exist to shape the world. A good example is how, in Skyrim, you play as The Last Dragonborn. Simply, you are the LDB because, due to Alduin's Wall and the prophecy of the LDB, the Nords believe you to be and so you are. In a reverse kind of way, the prophecy calls you the Last Dragonborn because the power of the people's beliefs are so strong that the belief becomes reality. This is how legend and prophecy works in the Elder Scrolls universe. I hope that clears some up.

The lore behind the Elder Scrolls game series can be mostly found within the four games themselves. It has to do with a prophecy in five parts that portends the return of the dragons. The fifth game in the series comes out in November of this year, and with it the fifth and final part of the prophecy comes true, and the dragons come forth.

In the first four games, the dragons were mentioned as ancient lore, and aren't seen in the game. In the fifth game, the last surviving dragonborn (your character) comes of age and goes forth to bind and control the dragons that can now be found almost everywhere. Dragonborn have many powers and spells that only dragons have, and these will be displayed in the game. The dragons even have a language all their own that your character can learn during his or her travels. How does the legend play out? That's up to you, of course. - LJS
