Hey! I am battling the third gym leader on pokemon Heart gold. I keep losing because Miltank stomps all over my pokemon and then they fall for attract! I have a:

Quilava, Male, 18
Mareep!, Female, 13
Onix, Male, 14
Togepi, Male, 16
Bellsprout, Male, 17.

Thanks!

One way to beat Whitney's Miltank is to trade for a Machop. Go on Route 34 and catch a Drowzee; this Drowzee can be traded for a Machop to someone in the Goldenrod Department Store (I think this person is on the 5th floor, but I'm not 100% sure).

Once you have your Machop, level it up. Machop learns Karate Chop at L10, which can hit Miltank for super-effective damage. Your Machop should be around L20 for best results.

As a backup plan, go onto Route 35 and catch a Nidoran (either gender). Both Nidoran learn Double Kick at L9, and evolve into either Nidorina (if female) or Nidorino (if male). These two Pokemon can assist you in taking down Whitney, if you need the backup.

I don't remember the exact order of the game, but if you have already received Rock Smash, give it to Onix as he can absorb Miltank's stomp. Rock Smash will occasionally lower Miltank's defense so then a faster Pokemon can come in after and 1-2 shot it. Also, getting a Machop (from the cave to Azalea I think) for super effective STAB attacks (Low Kick has an 80 base power on the heavy Miltank, STAB makes for 120 base power and super effective makes for a whopping 240 base power). Good luck!

In Goldenrod Dept. Store, you can buy the TM for Reflect. What Reflect does is that for 5 turns, it will halve any physical damage done to all of your team members. For example, Miltank's Stomp supposedly takes out let's say about 50HP from your Pokemon. But when Reflect is used, only 25HP will be taken. Togepi can learn reflect. Also try to make use of Bellsprout's Sleep Powder, it may help. Miltank is weaker to Special moves compared to physical ones, so try to see if Quilava's Ember does more damage than Flame Wheel. Good luck!

Train. I'm training for that gym now, getting my team to level 24.
