Mass Effect 2 Class Choice?

Ok, I recently bought Dragon Age II, and with it I got a free copy of mass effect 2 for PC... (Yay.) But now, I need some.... help choosing a class.

It must be around/close to the following

1) Can use a gun, different than a pistol and shotgun. (Pistol is ok, It's just I'm getting tired of it.)
2) Must have at least 2 damage abilities.
3) If possible I would like to be able utilize what I've seen the collectors do, which is create a shield barrier thing. It has a yellowish tint to it, and they can make it wherever they want. It's not ON them, it's IN FRONT of them.

I am currently playing an Engineer because of all the damage powers, I just got grunt... So I'm not really far, but that far, and I wouldn't like to start over, but I will if I find a class, better for me, than an Engineer.

Also, I would like to have something like Shockwave, or Singularity, incinerate, or Overcharge. If I could have more than one of those, that would be cool.

Also, I have literally only used a pistol in this game so far, I have found assault rifles, but never had a class or proficiency to use them...

So please, answer thoughtfully.

1. Soldier, infiltrator and vanguard are the only classes that get more than an SMG and pistol to start with. There is a mission a while in that allows you to pick a new weapon on any class.

2. If you want to rely on powers from a distance, engineer or adept are your best bets. If you want to get in really close, go Vanguard.

3. the barrier thing. The closest ability is "tech armor," which is essentially a more form-fitting version. That's only available to the Sentinel class.

The special powers (combat drone, biotic charge, singularity, etc) are all dependant on their specific classes. It really comes down to a matter of "what do you want?"

Personally, my favorite classes are:

Vanguard - short range, brutal, high risk and reward, and allowing you to go on the offensive and defensive at the same time (charge regenerates shields)

Sentinel - nearly indestructible with Tech Armor (which also takes out nearby enemies when destroyed), able to take on any type of enemy, good variety of powers...

Food for thought.

The Vanguard class is really aggressive. You dash into ur opponents, and then get right in their face: better have a shotgun. Its a lot of fun, but it is kinda difficult.

While its not the most aggressive or the most combat savvy, the infiltrator class is sooo good. I used it twice, the cloaking feature is just so cool. U can dart around the map w/o anyone seeing u, get into a perfect position, and just pick off collectors with ur sniper rifle. Its also good if ur getting hammered and u need to break away from the fight for a sec.

The Soldier class is pretty standard. They dont just use the pistol, and they do have damaging powers. While its not the most unique class, it kinda seems like wat ur looking for.

The sentinel class has a lot of good powers, but is kind of limited to the pistol. Still, the powers r just really awesome, and a MAJOR part of mass effect.

The Adept is pretty much a straight biotic class, so if ur really that tired of using the pistol, then i wouldnt suggest it. However, the adept is definitely the best out of all the classes for powers.

As far as the engineering class, its my least favorite. I think its weak, and the powers r kind of cool, but I just feel like the engineer doesn't really DO all that much.

In ur case i think u should go with either the soldier or vanguard class. Maybe the infiltrator.

soldier can use most of the weapons including assault rifles, but i don't think any class can make the instant cover.
