Fallout: New Vegas Noob Questions?

Ok, I've played Oblivion and absolutely loved it! I understood the controls/storyline well and was actually pretty good. So, once I noticed that the Fallout games were also made by Bethesda, I thought I'd buy the newest game and play it. After getting into about 2 hours into the game, I am still finding it hard to get into. When trying to complete some quests (couldn't tell if I was doing the main quest or a side quest :\) I noticed that I needed a high speech level to convince people to fight for me, is this important? I seemed to survive without them though... will my speech level be important later on? If so, how do I level up my speech level?

How do I buy a better weapon than the one that Sunny girl gave me during the tutorial? Also, I've been using that gun ever since she gave me it. I've noticed that now it's not dealing that much damage.. is it broken or w/e? How can I fix it?

k, noob questions over. much appreciated. (:

Haha , Dont worry dude , youre only 2 hours into a 70+hour game , its normal not getting the hang of it , + most people who played it have already played Fallout 3 before so dont worry :) .

Anyway ,

You know if its the main quest by simply understanding the story , you are looking fir the dudes who shot you , anything but that is not main . as for the speech thing , Fallout is all about creating a character that best fits you , and is different from all other characters by all other people , Speech is one of those things , You can concentrate on having a high speech and getting people to help you , OR concentrate more on having a high Guns and do more damage , so its a matter of choice , you imrove your Attributes when you level up , you get points to spend as you want . And the game is abuilt as if you will be perfectly able to finish it with ANY attributes , if you have 0 speech and noone helps you , the quest is just going to take a little longer , but thats okay because you upgraded something other than Speech which will help you in other situations

P.S : If someone on the game asks you a gun related question , your response will be determined by your Guns score not necessarily Speech .

stick with the gun she gave you until you go to the second town (the one with the dinosaur ) where im sure you will find a shop ... even if you dont i stayed with it for a while longer ... And yes you can fix it with some NPCs of you choose a certain dialogue option , or find a weapon similar to it and have a high Repair skill .

Keep in mind that Fallout : NV is AGES above Oblivion , not as in better but it was published many many years after it , so expect a more deep and realistic and complicated experience

Well Bethesda did not make Fallout New Vegas Obsidion Entertainment did Bethesda simply provided the engine and published the game Bethesda did make Fallout 3 thought but other than that the answer would be you have to get XP its not like oblivions training system. After you get a level up you put the points you have gotten into a skill (I.E. Speech) also for weapons you have to find currency which are bottle caps Simply called caps. The more caps you get the better things you can buy. Caps can be found in places (not a good way to get all your caps of course) and you can obtain them through quests that you do pay luckily most do. After that you can trade things you have for caps and then buy new things. Its a great game and its not to hard to understand after youve played for a while have fun!

Main quest line is called They went that-away. Your objective is to track down the man who shot you, Benny. Speech is pretty important in the game, it unlocks more dialogue options and makes some quests easier but you will still be able to complete the game without it. Each time you level up, you spend skill points, put those skill points into Speech and you should be able to unlock those options throughout the game.

You can loot guns from the people you killed but once you get a specific weight, depending on your strength, you won't be able to run/fast travel so you gotta drop a few guns to fast travel to the nearest market and sell the guns. Sunny Smiles gives you a varmint rifle, and you can repair it in the Mojave Outpost, for a price. It's in the left top corner in the map, at the corner pretty much. You can also spend skill points in Guns to increase its damage. You can also go to the shop called Gun Runners, near Strip. They sell the best weapons in the game, fully repaired, but they're very expensive.

for me the speech skill was important to me because like you said i got people to fight for me and also you can convince people to answer your questions that you ask. this is important in some quests and later in the game you can get better weapons like the gatling laser, recharger laser, light machine gun and more and more weapons. also you can mod your varmint rifle and any gun you want you can add scopes, silencers, extended mags and more mods. to fix your weapons you can either pay a person to repair it or find the similar weapon and you can repair it with those weapon parts.
