I'm planning on having a team of typhlosion, houndour/growlithe, a water pokemon, and a few others. I may also have weepingbell. I was wondering if butterfree was worth having on the team. Also if there is a better substitute for weepingbell to go against water and to fight overall it would be helpful. Thanks.

NONONO

Butterfree is the evolved form of caterpie and metapod. Being a bug pokemon means exposing it to a variety of weaknesses. It's a bug/flying type, NOT PSYCHIC. Dear God, no. D:<

Base Stats: HP: 60

Att: 45

Def: 50

Spd: 70

Sp Att: 80

Sp Def: 80

Butterfly @ leftovers (pray that you'll have time to heal while your opponents are asleep)

Sunnyday

Solarbeam

Flamethrower

Sleep powder

As you can see, it has peanuts for attack. Defense is also below average. Better special stats than other bug counterparts, though. One thing good about it is that it learns compoundeyes, which increases accuracy. This is good because butterfree later learns sleep powder. Imagine what you can do if your sleep powder hits every single time. Are you imagining it? Yes, it'll be hell. >;3

Butterfree can be a sunny beamer, the trick is learning how to make full use of its sp.atk. Teach it flamethrower/ sunnday/ solarbeam/ sleep powder. Its best possible moveset IMO.

As for a substitute for weepinbell...

Vileplume will make a good choice. It has average/above average stats (i mean, it's special attack is like whoo!), except for speed but that can be changed with sunnyday (it has chlorophyll, which x2 speed in sunlight) anyway, sunnday's even more beneficial for plume if you want to go against water, because sunlight also halves water attacks. Whee! Just make sure you don't let it get hit by an ice attack, which is probably fatal with STAB. ):< Teach it the standard solarbeam/ HP fire/ sludgebomb/ sunnday, with bomb there as a backup attack in case you're going against a fire type and it's down to your last poke. It's STABBed anyway, and with plume's good attack, it will be great. :D

Base Stats: HP: 75

Att: 80

Def: 85

Spd: 50

Sp Att: 100

Sp Def: 90

Vileplume @ quick claw (try to make up for its speed as much as possible.)

Sludgebomb

Sunnyday

Solar beam

HP fire/ giga drain

I hope it helped!

*Ps. STAB = same type attack bonus. This means that, when a pokemon uses an attack of it's own type, it'll gain a 50% increase in attack power. For instance, a pikachu using thunderbolt will do 1.5 times the damage than a lapras using one, even if they are of the same level and have the same sp.atk.

Butterfree can a great decision in your team as it consist both bug and psychic. The attribute "bug" is quite a abnormal Pokemon for a stereo-type trainer, in this case it quite a surprise when battling with others. It can corner others with their Pokemon attributes though the down-side that it has it's disadvantages without any offense or any strong defense. It may have stalling moves such as Stun Powder, Poison Powder or Sleep Powder. At least the bright side is that it can give your other party a stronger chance of obliterating the opponent.

No, butterfree is better used for a beginner team. Yet it takes one fourth damage from grass type moves. I think you're better off with weepingbell.

butterfree is not the best. its stats are horrible and the total is 385. Second, it evolves from caterpie, the worst pkmn in the game. Instead of looking for butterfree, look for feebas or magikarp. then evolve them to milotic or gyarados. Typlhosion, hondour, and growlithe are great, though. but remeber butterfree is horrible, get that gyarados or milotic

Yes as butterfree is both grass and psychic. Look up whether there are better grass/psychic combinations. I don't know off the top of my head. Start training it but don't hesitate to swap him if you meet a better one in the wild.

*Sorry to be rude but that is incorrect, Thomas, butterfree is the third evolution of weedle and kakuna and does not evolve further. Doduo evolves to dodrio over lever 30, they are not the same pokemon at all.*

Butterfree is pretty bad. Sure, it can learn sleep powder, and compoundeyes makes it more accurate. However, Butterfree will probably not get a chance to use these moves because it is very slow and will die in one hit from almost anything. Plus, butterfree isn't psychic; it's bug/flying, one of the worst type combos EVER. If you want a pokemon similar to Butterfree, there are a ton of better choices. I'll give you a few, and you can pick one of them instead

Scyther

Held Item: Focus Band

Slash

Wing Attack

Swords Dance

Reversal

Scyther hits faster and harder than Butterfree, plain and simple. Sword Dance if you get the chance, and watch your opponent's team crumble to the ground. With any luck, focus band will stop scyther from dying, and then Reversal has a whopping 150 base power, which mean it can kill almost anything in one hit. One of my favorite pokemon. You can later evolve it into Scizor, but Scyther is a better attacker and has more speed while Scizor can take more hits.

Exeggutor

Held Item: Miracleberry

Giga Drain

Psychic

Explosion

Sleep Powder/Synthesis/Moonlight

Exeggutor uses the same basic attacking strategy as Butterfree, but is better at it. The last move is up to preference, but I like Sleep powder for the pure annoyance factor. Explode when you're about to die anyways. I like this pokemon for your team because it means you don't need to use Victreebel/Weepinbel, as Exeggutor takes care of Weepinbel's type coverage. The only downside to Exeggutor is that he has more weaknesses than Butterfree (seven in all). However, unlike Butterfree, he has reliable recovery methods and enough defense to take a hit.

Gengar

Held Item: Miracleberry

Thunderbolt/Fire Punch

Ice Punch

Confuse Ray

Psychic/Explosion

I love Gengar because he is totally unpredictable. Depending on your moves, he can have super effective damage on almost any of pokemon. He is weak defensively, but he is fast enough and strong enough to kill most things in one hit, especially if it's super effective. Explode when you're about to die.

And, if you decide to go with Butterfree, here's a moveset, but good luck at keeping it alive long enough to attack...

Butterfree

Held Item: Quick Claw

Psychic

Sleep Powder

Giga Drain

Nightmare/Stun Spore

If you can get it to sleep on the first turn, you can kill it with nightmare before it wakes up with any luck. then, psychic away and hope you don't die. Quick Claw is to give Butterfree some hope at surviving one turn.

Hope that helps!

P.S. Butterfree does not, in fact, evolve into Dodrio as some people would like you to believe.

I think so, Butterfree learns a lot of useful moves such as Psychic.

In my professional opinion, Butterfree is a great Pokemon to raise. He learns sleep powder at level 4, which makes him pretty much invincible. I mean, once something is asleep, what is it going to do? Wake up? That's stupid.

Plus at level 6 it evolves into Dodrio. And you know what they say: 3 heads is better than 1.

Hope I helped!
