How to get a pet in World of Warcraft?

Question

I'm a night elf mage on World of Warcraft, and I went to this thing that was supposed to teach me how to get some sort of pet. I looked at my abilities, and it said I have the ability to get and train battle pets. Another question, in this World of Warcraft book it says I can get a nightsaber. I don't know how to get anything, could someone help me?
If you're confused on anything, tell me, and I'll try to edit.

Hello there:)

In World of Warcraft, you can catch, buy, train and battle with pets. You can buy some from vendors in capitals and then go out in the world and catch some more! In your mini-map on the upper right of your screen, check the option "Track Pets". It will show you what pets are around you while you're out in the world. Then you can simply go at a pet near you, click on it and battle it for a chance on catching it and adding it to your collection!



As for the nightsaber, it's a mount - you ride it and move faster. You can buy your first nightsaber at this NPC that hangs out in Darnassus ( Night elf capital) http://www.wowhead.com/npc=4730 . Before you buy it, be sure you have the appropriate riding skill. You can buy the riding skill from this NPC http://www.wowhead.com/npc=4753 . Keep in mind, you get to buy your first riding skill and mount at level 20!

You can get pets from vendors or out in the world. Don't confuse them with combat pets like what Hunters have, unless of course if you're a Hunter. Only Hunters get those. (A few other classes have a minion of sorts).



If you have the riding skill (or when you learn it), I think it's the NPC named Lelanai, the Saber Handler, you need to go see to buy the mount from.

(You can have the other race mounts also when you are exalted reputation with their city faction.)

When you hit level 20 a quest will automatically pop up about learning to ride mounts, complete the quest and buy the basic riding license then you need to find the mount seller who should be nearby and buy your first mount.
