I am going to pick up a Final Fantasy game for PS1, which one should I get?
Final Fantasy Origins (I and II)
Final Fantasy Chronicles (IV and Chrono Trigger)
Final Fantasy Anthology (V and VI)
VIII
or IX? Don't say VII because I can't afford it and don't say a newer one because I want to play an older one.

I would go for VI, since it's known to have one of the best story lines, music, characters, etc...

If not, IV or VIII would be good choices, but I would definitely go for VI if you can.

Get either Anthology or IX

People will probably come on here and tell you to get Origins, but in truth most people only play the earlier games just because they have a superiority complex and it makes them feel good to play the original. It's not that good.

FFVI is truly an amazing game, one of a kind with excellent characters and some memorable moments. The big bad guy is perhaps one of the best villains in FF history.

FFIX was also very good, a great leap forward in character development and personality. Some really great characters for you to play and get to know - but the villain is not so awesome as in VI.

FFVIII is not as good in these terms...certainly worth playing if you love the series, and an excellent game in its own right, but I dont think it can stand up to IX or VI.

I'd go with VI or IV.

If you search online, people have pretty good things to say about VI. (Some even say it's the best of the Final Fantasy games.) The music is nice and the the story is fun, though I haven't completed it. In fact, I just bought it last week and am currently hooked.

I probably have a soft spot for IV, but it really does have a good story and is pretty fun.

(Edit: The downside for IV is that most people criticize the story as poorly translated, though I'm not sure about the PS1 version.)
