Well, the problem with any new Total War game is that there really are few places that they can go that they haven't already gone before. Keep in mind that all of the games are based on times where there was at least 50 years of almost continuous warfare to base the game off of. It also has to be grand-strategy accessible. For example, you couldn't make one about now, simply because the battles would be 20-50 guys taking cover and shooting at each other. And that's just not fun. The same goes for basically any war after the year 1900. Maybe you could get one revolving around World War One style strategy. But that was one war, and the time period is maybe at most 30 years. Not enough for a Total War game.
You mentioned the American Civil War. Now, warfare was pretty much like this for the ten years before the Civil War, and about 30 years after. But there weren't many wars during that time. I mean, if you look at Rome Total War, it encompasses almost hundreds of wars in it's time span. If you were to base one in the 1850-1900 era, you would basically only have the Civil War and perhaps the Crimean War to base it off of. And in my opinion, that's really not enough.
So it's really a tough position that Creative Assembly is in. They've done a very good job hitting all of the major places in history. So where do they go now? I would personally love to see a remake of Rome. That game's almost 7 years old now, and on an engine like Shogun 2 or Empire had, it would be phenomenal. I can't really see where they can go. Of course, this is me who was caught off guard by Empire and literally thought "There's no way they can make that fun." And now I've beaten it twice and still have a game going. So I'm excited for pretty much whatever they might do in the future.

i've been a big fan of the very first total war game until the most recent and i noticed that the game developer is following a linear historical pattern starting from the historic roman battles to the japanese-style civil war in shogun 2.
i think the next total war game wiill feature world war I or II or possibly the american civil war.
it would still appeal to millions of total war fans whatever the context of the next game will be so long as gameplay and graphics will be improved and bugs minimized.
other than that, i really don't have any idea.-)

certainly the main suitable era to play a finished conflict game is pre-cutting-area conflict once you have not got tanks yet hand-to-hand try against turns into greater prevented. So the era that Empire encompasses have the main suitable moments of Strategic conflict such because of the fact the Napoleonic Wars (certainly the Napoleonic Wars) yet in view which you do not choose me to point out that. Then i'm going to declare the era suitable after the tip of the commercial Revolution whilst Rifles are transforming into the foremost weapon of decision. so as that should point, the subsequent maximum suitable finished conflict game might certainly be the Civil conflict and Prussian and Austrian warfares in the late nineteenth century. additionally, events of the British empire crumbling from seceding colonies may well be exciting to adventure. That and Empire finished conflict will in all probability be the main suitable technology of gunpowdered conflict, any later would be too complicated and unbalanced. i think of finished conflict is awarae of that so as that they in all probability will make vast improve packs and upload directly to the exciting era to play in. damn, i choose this game NOW... and in all probability a sparkling photographs card.
