Here are the parts:

Graphics Card: This is the main thing a gamer wants. I recommend a Geforce 8600 or 8800

Processor: I would recommend an Intel Core 2 Duo e6600. You can go a bit cheaper, but don't go higher unless you have cash to burn. The price jump is huge, but not the performance.

RAM: 2 GB should do you well.

Motherboard: I believe the nForce are most popular with gamers. I have a nForce 680i and have been happy with it.

Hard Drive: Get what you need. Just make sure it has at least 7200 RPM, or it is too slow.

Disk Drive: You will want at least a DVD-ROM drive so you can install games.

Sound Card: If you like your audio, get a nice one. If you don't really care and just have some junky speakers anyway, you can skip on this, assuming your motherboard has built in audio.

Case: If you have a nice gaming rig, it is going to make a lot of heat. Get a case that has a good cooling system. Getting one with a large fan will make it run quieter (it can run slower if it is larger). You probably do not need or want water cooling, it is a pain to set up.

Power Supply: This will sometimes come with your case. On a good gaming system, you will need a lot of watts- 600 or so is probably a good number to make sure you can expand later. Personally, I like the one at the following link. It is not too expensive, and very quiet- I have to put my ear right next to it to notice it over my other fans. http://www.xoxide.com/aerocool-zerodba-620w-power-supply.html

All PCs come with a standard set of parts; there are just good and bad parts.

Just remember to focus on the following:

Video Card - look for something in the $250-$300 range; make sure there's no TurboCache, PCI-E x16 is recommended

RAM - get about 2GB, the faster, the better

Processor - something around the $400 and up range should do

Your friend should know all the parts you need. The absolute best parts can change constantly. Also, the parts need to all match up nicely for performance. If you go top-notch on everything, your PC can easily cost more than $20k.

Tom's Hardware recently published a guide to build a hardcore gaming system around the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 CPU. Click the link below to see the article - it's a step-by-step on what to buy, your friend will dig it. Your question seems to emphasize super fast/wicked aspects over thriftiness - if the price tag seems too high you can browse the site for build guides dating back a few months or more. CS will still look fine but at a lower frame rate...

possibly get nVidia six hundred sequence (675 or 680) as a replace for a photos card. additionally possibly positioned money right into a quad middle i7 intel CPU in case you propose on doing a great variety of gaming. maximum video games would be superb with 4 GBs of ram yet for video games like farcry 3 in max settings you desire 8GBs of ram to play lag unfastened in spite of the undeniable fact that it is not as significant as a GPU or CPU. reliable luck on the build.

Get good

CPU ($200)

Video Card($200)

Ram($150 for a decen 2gigs)

and I guess you can have an Okay mother board ($80)

and all of the cooling will run you about $20
