I'm gonna go pretty basic and say:

Addons help game play, make things easier :)

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/addons/

This website is the safest to download from.

Ones that I find useful are:

Titan Panel (This gives quick functions, and shows extra information, like how much gold you have, if you need to repair, how long you've been playing, etc.)

QuestHelper (super popular- this basicly tells you where to kill and where to go for quests.)

Auctioneer (Gives you prices from the auction house)

Cartographer (super popular- this gives you co-ordinates on the map, they're suprisingly useful)

DamageMeters-

SWStats- These last two are good for tracking dps and heals while in a group or even on your own.

Others include:

Omen- A Raiding mod, Im guessing you probably wont need this yet.

Deadly Boss Mod- Another raiding mod, this is useful in battlegrounds too.

Group Calender - this is a guild calender, it's good for scheduling events

Good Luck, and if you need any other help, feel free to email me, which you can access via my Yahoo Answers page. :)

EDIT:

he he, I just thought of something. You might not know how to add them! lol

Ok, so you download them.

Then you usually "unzip" them, To do this, right click on the file, and press "extract files here" or something similar. Then you will need to move those files in to the game files.

Now here's the part to listen to:

1. You need to put them into your Game file. So you need to find out what Hard Disk it's on. If you don't know already, you can

"Right Click" on the desktop icon or icon in your Start Menu,

and press "Properties",

Look at the box that says "Target", and it will say a drive, for example mine says D:\Program Files\World of Warcraft

You will have something similar.

2. Go to the location by opening a new 'Windows Explorer' or 'My Computer' screen, and going folder by folder to the World of Warcraft one.

3. Double click on the WoW folder

4. Double click on the Interface folder

5. Double click on the Addons folder

6. Copy the files that you extracted from the download, and paste them into this folder.

7. Launch WoW, and you can alter which addons are used etc. from the character screen after you login.

Good Luck, and if you need any help, or have questions, feel free to email me, which you can access via my Yahoo Answers page. ^_^

Ok, Cynthia above said they are cheats... Well they are NOT!!!

.

Addons are some of the nifty tools written using a language called LUA. Bliizzard incorporated a inbuilt lua decoder into the game to encourage the production and use of add-ons.

.

Most add-ons lie in the background and some can drastically change the way the interface feels and looks.

.

Experimentation is the best way to find out which add-ons suit you the most. If u donot want to experiment though, they are always pre compiled sets or UI-Compilations that u can download.

While most single Addons rarely exceed a few KBs, compilations can be upto 50MB or more. The mazzel compilation is one of the most highly rated compilations available, but does use a lot of memory space.

.

Experiment and find for urself. If u donot like any addon, u can always disable it from the addons menu on the start-up screen,

.

Loads of information above on how and where to get them, id just like to point out the warnings:

1. If u are using a low end system, donot use too many addons. They use up memory space, cpu resources and internet bandwidth. If u have a medium-high end system, feel free to use as many as u want. I use over 50 addons and cant live without any of them.

2. Addons make life really easy after u manage to configure them. Initially configuring them may seem daunting, especially for a new player, but once u get a hang of it, u will keep asking for more.

3. Don't worry if an addon seems to make the game too easy. If it was illegal, blizz would not allow it. Lots of players feel addons like healbot and proximo are on the verge of being cheats, but they just make life easy(or tough for those that donot have them). They are all good to have.

.

Important addon note: If u are a non healing class, use "Grid". If u are a healing class, Grid can still be used, but u would be better off using the raid/party interface of X-Perl or Pitbull.

.

Use X-Perl or Pitbull, NOT BOTH. I tried using both together for a while, not only was it entirely useless, but they use double the space where just 1 would do.

.

GET THESE AT ALL COSTS: FUBAR, Cartographer, Mobinfo, MetaHUD or ArcHUD, Atlasloot enhanced, Bartender 3.0/4.0, Omen, WIM(Wow instant messenger), Gatherer, Auctioneer, Equipcompare, OmniCC.

Rest are up to you.

Addons are mods to the game. Some addons I like are the bossmods and bagnon. The bossmods help during raids by announcing when a boss is going to do one of their special attacks or change to their next phase. Bagnon combines all of the bags that you have into one. My favorite mod is questhelper because it tells you where to go for your quests on the map. To get mods, download them from curse-gaming.com. Then, extract the files into the addon folder thats in the world of warcraft folder.

I have been playing for 3 years now and i have found that the addons from thottbot (cosmos) and that site in general are the most helpful. It might be because i am "older" and these are rather simple to use, but I have found that I have everything I need on all 8 of my different characters with what I downloaded here.

I personally rate the highest help:

1. map cords

2. equip/compare

3. regent helper

Add ons are third party programs that run within WoW and are generally intended to make your experience better.

These range from totem timers for a shaman to a mod that makes all your bags appear in one window.

You can browse an ever growing list of Add ons at www.curse.com, but you should talk to your guildies about stuff they recommend.

How useful a mod may or may not be depends on your class, an add on that counts combo points is worthless to a priest the same as at totem timer is worthless to a warlock.

Some mods most people have include:

Omen (for threat monitoring in raids)

Ct_mod (a whole set of mods engineered to make WoW easier)

Mobmap (Shows you where mobs and npc related to your quest are.

You can follow the instructions given on each add on's page for how to install them, but most of the time all you do is drag them into your /wow/interface/addons folder.

Add-ons are mods that have been designed independently by people that do certain functions to the game, like QuestHelper and Cartographer, like the person above said.

and as for the most useful, the two above are probably THE best. other good add-ons are Bartender3, Omen Threat Meter, TitanPanel, DamageMeters, and GuildCalender.

Omen Threat Meter keeps track of threat (which determines who the enemy attacks while you're in a group or attacking with a pet)

Bartender and TitanPanel are UI mods, and give you different bar setups (as opposed to the basic Blizzard ones)

Titan, however, is much more. it adds menu bars to the top and bottom of your screen and keep up-to-date tabs on things such as who's on in your guild, mail, friends, how much money you have, your regeneration rates, position, and honor/marks.

DamageMeters keeps track of not only Damage per second (DPS), but many more things can be kept track of, like Healing per second, total healing or damage done, Overhealing, and more that i can't even think of.

GuildCalender is almost required by most raiding guilds, as it enables you to keep track of dates of raids, instance runs, and other events.

They are little programs that you can add onto your game to make it easier. Cartographer and Quest Helper are the most common that I've seen. They're basically cheats.. with Cartographer you can see an entire map without having to discover it and Quest Helper tells you where to go to do your quests...

I forget the name of the site you can download them from.. I haven't played in a while..
