Something that I ran into when school searching was that some schools offer a Bachelor of Science instead of a Bachelor of Fine Arts. The difference is the amount of art classes you have to take. It also will probably have a different atmosphere. I take a lot of critical studies courses, but they're more art oriented (like art history and language arts). At the liberal arts colleges I toured, it felt more like what you'd imagine college to feel like. I've heard nothing but good things about the Art Institute up here. I think schools with commercials give people the idea that it's a second rate school. A few other schools I could name if you want to look into them are Parsons, Pratt, Ringling, Full Sail, Rhode Island School of Design, and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), but to my knowledge those are all private colleges and are a little pricier than the Art Institutes. An option could be to attend a "real school" for your core courses, and then transfer your credits to a more specialized art school.

I second the vote for Cogswell Polytechnical College! It isn't a community college, however - it's a four year WASC accredited non-profit college so when you finish you'll have either a B.A. or B.S. depending one what you choose to study. It has a financial aid program, so if you're struggling money-wise that's worth asking about. They have majors in both animation (2D and 3D) and Game Design. I was a student there until recently studying in their Entertainment Design program and can truthfully say some of the professors at Cogswell are the best I've had in my life. There's a Game Design club at the school and it's a super-friendly, creative environment with a ton of other film and game lovers. Alums have gone on to work at Pixar, EA, Dreamworks, Disney, Santa Cruz Games, etc...I'd definitely check out their website at www.cogswell.edu and see what you think! If you have more questions about the school you can call or email them for more information. :)
As far as your sister thinking it's a joke to go into this kind of industry, it's not. If you look up starting salaries for these kinds of jobs they're nothing to laugh at and grow exponentially with your experience level. If you know what you want to do, take the initiative and go to a school with a focus on what you love. I have a B.A. from another liberal arts college and by my junior year knew I wanted to work in games and felt like I was wasting my time. You get a fully accredited degree from Cogswell and there are a lot of opportunities at the school to make industry contacts (company tours, company contracts within the school, short film projects). Hope that helps!

They're not the way to go.. a friend of a friend didn't get to graduate from one.. because his check bounced. That's their criteria for graduation, payment in full. It had nothing to do with skills or talent (he had none). Most of the time their "industry connections" will just get you a job in customer service.. which you could find just as easily on a job website.
If you're still in school, have your guidance counselor or computer teacher recommend a better university.
Edit: lol.. trust Devry? They're the one I mentioned above.

Try Dvry University of video game design or Collions ( i think) college. I trust them if i was in your shoes. But I think Drvy will be the best college in your school.
ps. Tell your sister that its your life and you can do the heck you want to do
