Check out my healing spec, it is Good for doing groups and still lets you solo. If you plan on sololing more than grouping you can go mostly discapline, you won't be a strong healer for heroic dungeons but you will be good enough for normal ones if you gear doesn't suck.

This is a hybrid build if you want to be a decent healer and do decent damage (remember, gear is a huge factor in how good this is)

This build is a crit build mostly for damage, you can still heal regular groups but heroic dungeons you would need a strong group to be a main healer

Holy is by far the best healing spec.

You can choose any spec you want, but for most 5-man dungeons above level 50 or so, a Holy priest will have by far the best healing. I have a level 70 Holy priest and with enough spell damage gear, you can do decent damage, just not very fast and much less than Shadow or Discipline, usually.

I would play Shadow up to about level 50 or so and then switch to Holy for dungeons. If you get in a raiding guild with lots of healers, but few Shadow priests you can stick to Shadow, because it is usually good to have 1 or 2 Shadow priests in a raid for group HoT (heal over time) and mana regen.

You pretty much only play Discipline at higher levels for PvP. However, I've heard you can solo decently, so maybe you could try Discipline instead of Shadow at lower levels.

The best way to do damage as a Holy priest is to make sure you have a spell damage set of gear (for soloing mostly) for those situations where you can get by with less than your best healing. However, you will want to have your best gear be healing gear.

Don't worry too much about switching to and learning how to play Holy spec until after level 50. Before that you will be changing gear every 2-3 levels and won't really want to spend much time and money on gear. Some people don't worry until they're level 70.

As a priest, you will always have healing spells.

Choose whatever spec you want, shadow, holy, etc.

Holy will give the best bonuses for healing, shadow is more for damage...there is a cost for going one, the other would be lessened.

Look for the gear that gives you bonuses to both heal and damage.

Priests are one of those classes that are very limited by the spec they choose. If you spec Holy, you will be a first-class PVE (raiding) healer. If you spec Shadow, you will be a moderate DPS / support class (due to spells that return health and mana to your party). If you spec Discipline, you will be set for PVP / Arena healing (due to the additional survivability).

Generally speaking, Shadow priests CAN heal, but that is not the function of the spec. None of their talents are geared toward healing, just as Holy is not geared toward DPS. Because of this, you essentially have to choose what you want to do - either you DPS, or you heal. It's an unfortunate truth about Priests.

I have a Priest and like Izzy above said, go Shadow spec if you want to level at a nice speed. Being Holy from the start can be difficult when doing quests on your own. Re-spec to Holy as you get closer to mid-60's when raiding really starts to take off.

you can respec your talent points at level 40 and 60

go shadow spec until 40 then deside if you really think you need to respec in order to heal better.

you honestly should heal fine as a shadow spec until you get to the much higher levels.

healing is best for any priest... especially in end game...

no serious raider will include healers other than good gear healing priest... at least not for end game PVE...

shadow is ok i guess for PVP... but otherwise no.

Ok.

1.holy= healing

2.shadow= dps

3. disc= PWNING

u either heal...or you DPS...nobody will let you do both if you do instances

holy= healing

shadow=DPS

if you choose shadow your healing will be terrible
