Soul Calibur 5 has a story mode that can be beaten in about 3-5 hours depending on skill level. The story mode revolves around one character not the entire roster. The arcade mode does not have endings for the characters. There is no real equipment system, it has been watered down into an aesthetics only system with a few weapons for each character and no stat system. Create a character is a looks only affair with no stats other than choosing a fighting style based off of the character roster. If you enjoyed the series story lines and amazing story mode for each character you should look elsewhere as they have killed it. They have used a lot of drawings too like they did in Soul Blade for PS1 with just a few FMVs for story mode which is even cheesier since they only had to do one character. As for redeeming qualities the game does have good multiplayer with a colosso mode which has a lobby for most major cities stateside and across the world. However everyone gathers in the New York, Los Angeles and Chicago rooms. They also have tournaments and ranked matches. You can play standard vs matches unranked just like Street Fighter but if the player that made the room leaves, which happens often if they lose then everyone gets booted from the room. The create a character is interesting with more control over character appearance than any other and probably the best part of Soul Calibur 5. If I were you I would go over to Redbox and rent it first.

RE:
Why did Soul Calibur 5 get a lot of bad reviews?

The reviewers just mainly hated the characters in general. Lack of weapons, terrible characterization on the newer characters, and also, they said it seemed "Rushed".
Honestly, it IS the highest rated game out at the moment according to Metacritic with an 81, only 4 points away from Soul Calibur 4.

Ratings aren't always important, just look at the gameplay of it on youtube and if you like it buy it! although, I prefer soul calibur iv (4), only because certain characters are in it that have been in soul calibur since the beginning like taki, sophitia and etc. although they have characters that play just like them in V that still won't do. But you never might know if they come out as DLC but even then they'll probably just charge you for that too just like they did on IV for either yoda or dath vader.

I think mostly because of story and customization. The story was almost non existent and the customization was totally changed. It was a lot better in the third game
