Ignore what people say about the hardware strengths of the PS3 and 360 because they are more or less equal for now. You won't see anything clearly outshining the other (unlike the PS2 vs. GameCube/Xbox). The PS3 is "superior" in theory, but the only meaningful superiority it has is in its file format (Blu-ray which offers up to 50GB in dual-layer discs compared to DVD9's paltry 9.4GB).
As far as which you should get it, really depends. The 360 clearly shines in its online network, which, although Xbox Live Gold does cost money, offers a lot in its Video and Game Marketplaces. Its voice chat support and party support is far better developed than on the PS3.
The PS3 is the better media player, and it does have a Blu-ray player.
At the end of the day, it really depends on the games you want to play. Many big titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 will head to both systems, but you can't forget the system exclusives like Splinter Cell: Conviction, a 360 exclusive, and LittleBigPlanet, a PS3 exclusive.
EDIT: Why are you even asking us if you're so dead set against the 360?
