I am going to create a fantasy RPG set in the middle (dark) ages for the PC. It will be fairly basic as I am not very experience but I need people to give me an outline of classes to have (I know the classes and basic attributes but need to know the difference between a warrior and a paladin). I need to know what makes a good map. I need to know what you would enjoy in an RPG in general and what could be done to improve the games that you have played to give my game a new edge to it.

Thank you very much and I will be sure to rate the best answer as the best answer!

I am working on RPG too, but I have no classes...

I have just made it like that there are some martial arts, which when you control, then you are class...

for example: If you will control Magic (like martial art), then you will be mage. If you would control Alchemy (too martial art), then you will be Alchemist. And now best point of all the answer: If you will control Magic AND Alchemy, then you could be called like "Mage" and "Alchemist".

Have fun! ;)

It is very annoying to set out the difference bwtween stuff like warriors and paladins, so here's a plan.

Have 3 categories of the "regulars", the ranged archer-like people, heave melee and magic. Include a rogue/assassin category if u want.

Then make a few (2 or 3) classes in each category.

Here's a rough example: Warrior category classes: KNIGHT, high hp, defence, medium damage, little to no magic.

BARBARIAN high hp, attack, low defence, some magic

PALADIN high hp, defence, lots of magic, low damage

the trick here is to balance all the classes you make. This is pretty easily done once you have released a beta, and asked for feedback. Soon you will probably find some underused classes and buff them a bit and nerf the overused classes.

This encourages people to use a wide variety of classes.

A good example of balanced classes is in the game Guild Wars, where there is pvp and pve(environment). the healing priest/monk class typical of these games plays a nice role in both pvp and pve as you can join people's parties and adventure together - monks are pretty much a must-have for healing. So they are needed a lot but if too many exist they cant fight for themselves

same as the previous answer for classes but with a map you want to make it as much like the country your basing it on (google earth will help there) or if it a fantasy game then a good balance between wide open ares with challenging enemies (depending on level) and towns to rest in and to get quests from.

towns can vary from a large city to a small outpost. with a fantasy type of game the map can be what ever you want it to be. variety in landscape is the key to a good map.

flat map = boring

1 town lots of space = boring

just to confuse you a map that is entirely town can be excellent if done right look at assassins creed (i know not all of it is town but every thing is down in the towns)

for a unique i think you shoud have 3 paths (Neutral,Good,Evil)

then 3 classes for each path

Neutral(Outlaw,rougue mage and Theif archer)

Good (Paladin,War Mage or Priest and Archer)

Evil (Demon, Deathmage or Satanist and Demonic Archer)

now when you pick classes you usually don't get to pick genders or customise yuor characters so that might bring an edge.

Outlaw-Normal person who survives everyday life by doing what they have to do equivelent to a paladin or Demonic knight

Rougue mage- someone who uses their magic spells to get what they want and have no regard for rules even their own equivalent to aDeath mage or War mage

and the others Vice versa

i think a good map is made up of

multiple levels like roof and celler

instaed of stages its all adventure

not too much of one skin or colour of level wall or floor

not too many powerups and make it do able even on hardest

edges

skills that usually x2 damge to your opponent for when they damage you

big bosses

own creation of music

envirment can kill player like swamps or pitfall traps

thats all i can think of

Dont even bother trying to make it. You are not very experienced? That there is no way you can make a game someone would rather play that WOW Runescape, or anything. Sorry
