Kingdom Hearts is the original, of course. Set directly after KH1 is Chain of Memories, which explains events that happen between KH1 and KH2. Along with CoM is Rebirth, which shows Riku's story at the same time as Sora's. Also taking place between the two games is 358/2 Days, which is Roxas' story before KH2. Then KH2 comes, set about a month after CoM's end. KH2, so far, is the last in the plotline chronologically. Birth By Sleep is a prequel, set ten years before the events of the first KH. As far as KH: Coded and KH Dream Drop Distance go, I haven't played them so I don't know.

For playing order, I'd recommend: KH1, Chain of Memories (or Re:Chain of Memories, the console version), KH2, 358/2 Days, then Birth By Sleep. Or, you could skip CoM and go directly in to KH2, but some of the characters and subplots might be a little confusing. I, personally, played half of KH1, watched the rest on YouTube, then played KH2 and went from there.

This doc explains pretty much the whole story in a relatively simple way. Too bad it doesn't use character names.

KH 358/2 days.

When someone becomes a heartless a nobody is left behind. If the person is strong will that nobody will look and even act like the orginal. But it has no heart and no feelings. A group called Organziation 13 has set up to find themselfs hearts, even if it means destorying any world they come accross. There new member is Roxas (which is Sora nobody because Sora became a heartless temporily in the orginal to save Kairi). Roxas spends a year with the orginazation and becomes good friends with Roxas and another keyblade wielder named Xion. However Xion is a puppet deidcated to suck Roxas dry and become a copy of Sora. When she learns that she leaves the group and Roxas decides to try to track her down. RE:Coded.

Back home Mickey is enjoying a relaxing vacation but Jimminey notices a strange message in one of the journals. They decide to create a virtual world in the journal and use a virtual Sora to clean the journal up. After cleaning the journal up and exploring Castle Oblvion the virtual Sora encounters a virtual Namine who tells him that the real Sora has memories from one of the keyblade wilders from BBS (and it's why Roxas looks like him) and that if those memories awake it will destory him. Mickey sends a message to Sora about it and it's where DDD starts.
