FFXI on the PS2 and PC costs $12.99 (US) a month for your first character. The PlayOnline service (a browser you use to download updates, check e-mail, join chatrooms, and login to FFXI) however is always free. Also, every extra character you make will cost you an extra $1.00 a month.



Final Fantasy XI is good overall, but even better for people who:



A) have alot of time to kill.

B) like socializing and teamwork in their MMORPGs.

C) believe patience pays off.

Yes you DO have to pay monthly. It is about $15

It's ok, there are certain things I like about it more than WoW but not much. It's hard to find a group of people to kill things because only about 500,000 people play, and even a couple years back I know I would wait a good hour just to find a group. The fighting aspect is turn based and when you die there are no graveyards around to get your body back, so you have to go to your home point (which may be across the world) or find a person to rez you (which could take longer than running back)

The good things about it are that your character can be all the classes and you get to choose 2 to be at once. The Auction House system in my opinion is better and you get a house you can store things in.

It is the most popular and most successful PvE mmorpg, and the forth most popular overall (WoW, lineage 1 &2 have more subscribers, but are PvP based). FFXI is the only mmorpg renown for having a strong and well delivered plot.



Its an excellent game, and majority of the issues people used to have (taking too long, for example) have been addressed, and adjusted.



If you are on a less popular server, it can take a while to find parties and such, but most servers, its not a problem on.
