Question:
Is it right to ban Manhunt 2?
2007-10-30 15:08:51 UTC
Dont you think it is a bit perfetic considering that it is only animated violence when there is movies out there like Hostel and SAW which all go unnoticed.. and i am not the only one who thinks this but i think it is unfair. I dont agree that any game or film should be banned but why dont they stick to the rating system for f**** sake..

whats your opinion is what i am saying right?

I don't think it is banned, though some stores are refusing to carry it. I haven't played the game, so I have no opinion on the game itself. However, if there is a demand then there will be a supply. I think a ratings system is good, it works for movies/adult video's. The problem as always is the parents, how many 12 years do you know who's parents bought them GTA, I know alot, most 12-15 year olds don't have $50-60 in their pocket to go buy a game. So, a bunch of dildo's in congress want to make a huge deal of video games just like they did heavy metal 20 years prior...bunch of bs and waste of tax payer $'s.

The issue I take with people (ie watchdog groups) raising such a stink about this game and others like it, is the fact that they forget that it is the child's parent or guardian to monitor what their child is doing. Anymore a parent will by their child whatever so they don't have to deal with their children. If the rating system truly worked the way it was supposed to then pulling games off of store shelves would not be an issue. Still the argument is raised that a child can go over to a friends house and play this ultra violent game or download it from whatever site on the internet. I still say it falls back on the parents to monitor and talk with their children about what they are doing.

As you have stated that their are movies out now such as the Saw series and the Hostel series, I find these movies to be ultra gory and yet parents allow their children to watch these movies and think nothing of it. Watchdog groups would rather attack video games rather than point a finger where it needs to be pointed (again) at the parents. The whole notion that parents are way too busy with their lives is utter garbage and a lame excuse, all it takes is 10 seconds to ask a question.....

The main argument that the anti-game campaigners have is that when playing a game you are in some way attached to the action on screen - you have direct input into what happens. Watching a film, you are a passive bystander with no influence over the events. However, the banning of Manhunt 2 is ridiculous. The first game was one of my favourites (in fact I'm annoyed I can't play it on my Xbox 360 with the VGA cable). As I've said in another answer, the whole plot of Manhunt is that you are in a kill or be killed situation. For those that don't know the story runs that you are on death row, to be executed by lethal injection. Someone injects you with a tranquiliser and kidnaps you, dumping you in a snuff movie. The only chance you have for survival is to kill everyone else for the satisfaction of the bad guy, who watches your every move and contacts you via an ear piece. The violence in the game is not gratuitous, it is necessary within the story. I know I can only speak for myself and not for the nutters who DO kill other people, but I certainly don't feel desensitised by the violence in games, or movies for that matter. I hit a deer in my car a few months ago, and it was horrible to see it, made my stomach turn over, even though I go out of my way to kill all the deers I can in World of Warcraft, and used to laugh at deers exploding in Unreal. In the 80s/90s violent movies were blamed for everything. Since then the idiots that want to ban things they've never even seen have a new enemy - video games. As they become more realistic in their presentation people are realising they have something new to blame for society's failings.

I'll share my opinion from a couple of different viewpoints...

As a Gamer....

I think it sucks that there has to be a ban on certain types of material in games... I hate the fact that because of some kid somewhere has a disassociation problem and kills his whole class or murders his family in their sleep I have to put up with my games being censored...

As a Parent:

There are things that I believe my children should NOT be exposed to at too young of an age. I don't think ANY child under the age of 18 should be allowed to play or even WATCH something like Manhunt 2....I believe it to be damaging to their sense of right and wrong as they develop their sense of identity and moral compass.

As a Teacher:

Kids have a HUGE problem in todays day and age dealing with their anger...their aggression...their sense of right and wrong. I believe that it's partially BECAUSE of the plethora of images and ideas that young people have free acess to, such as graphic images and potentially damaging game concepts. I truly believe that images of horrific violence and vile human interactions damage...even if on a subliminal level.

Not to sound like a hypocrite but the bottom line is this....

If you are a well balanced, reasonable ADULT you should be able to view and play whatever you want....If you are one of those people that can't handle the emotional and mental effect of graphic games and movies....then please, don't take away my right to things like that...simply because you can't hang.

I see what you're saying. I think that if the game didn't have "you" as the killer, people would be a lot more ok with it. Like if you were watching someone get killed like the ways they kill people in MH2 and you were trying to save them...or something else, then I don't think it would get all the uproar.

But you are positioned as the morbid killer in the game, which makes folks uneasy about what must be going on through your head while you play as you murder people.

I don't think it should be banned, but I think parents should be careful what they let their children play, and adults need to show maturity when they play violent games of any nature and realize it's just a game.

I se your point, but I guess it's being banned because video games like this one eventually contributes in people seeing violence as "not so bad" in real life, after watching vidoe games like this one, etc. people get used to this kind of images and ideas. I'm not sayin gplayers will become murderers or anything like that, but they get less sensitivity towards violence.

Well it has alot of other stuff besides violence, but from what i see there have been much worse movies and movies music or whatever should never be banned because were suppose to have freedom.

I have an idea for these tree hugging, flag burning, book banning, pacifists who complain about everything just to hear themselves talk...how about moving to Iraq and spouting off there and see how fast a guy with a turban jumping around like a monkey comes to grab you and cut your head off!!!!!

I am so tired of people trying to shove their values down peoples throats. This is America and if people want to play a video game that exploits murder or sit down watch a porno and eat a bucket of KFC while doing it, then IT IS THEIR GODDAMNED RIGHT TO DO JUST THAT.

Countless American soldiers have died overseas to justify one of the core values of America, which is freedom of choice. It is dishonorable to all of them to limit what people want to do with their lives or speak their minds as they see fit.

I grew up watching Bugs Bunny and Wile E Coyote and all of those crazy cartoons, and I was never dumb enough to believe that you can shoot people or jump off a cliff and survive. It is about having great parents who teach you wrong from right instead of letting Barney tell you how to live your life.

If I want to buy the AO version of Manhunt 2, then it is my right to do so. If you do not like the game, then don't buy it, the same goes for violence in TV or bad language or those stupid a$$clowns who chirp on and on about Howard Stern, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T WATCH OR BUY IT, BUT LEAVE ME ALONE TO MAKE MY OWN FRIGGIN CHOICES.

Its very wrong that they censor games but not movies I think IMO we need a ratings revision. Ofcourse I do understand why they did this... Because they all knew that one way or another kids were eventually get their hands on it.

Banned? No.

But I have no problem with the console manufacturers choosing to refuse to allow it on their systems.
