I am currently recording video for my YouTube channel using a HD PVR but have recently thought about getting an upgrade although I am not sure what to get. I have heard very good things about the Elgato and very bad thing about the PVR 2 but after watching videos I can't seem to find any bad things about it plus I can't see much difference between the two, they have the same capture settings and similar software to it. So would it be better to get the PVR 2 or the Elgato? I am not worried about it being portable or it needing a high spec PC as I have one but I want to know which would have the best quality? Or do you have another suggestion other than these two? Price is not a problem so please let me know as I am feeling rather stuck as to which one I should get.

The elgato is better for long term, meaning that it will last a lot longer than the PVR 2. So while they might record at the same level, the PVR 2 will break sooner than the elgato. Also, the elgato software is a lot better than the other because you can upload straight to YouTube, do basic video editing, stream to TwitchTV and all sorts of stuff like that.

I'm currently using the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition Plus. It's not bad. The quality is OK, but I want to tweak the settings a bit more to see if I can get it better. Personally I feel like there's quite a bit of flickering and pixelation. I have a sample video up on my HD PVR 2 review on my site below, so go check it out to see what it looks like.

Hardware-wise, they're pretty similar. The Elgato has the cool DVR feature that lets you go back 15 minutes to capture something in the game that's already happened and record it. The HD PVR 2 has a record button right on the box, but I hardly ever use it. Also, the HD PVR 2 requires a power adapter. I'd read that this meant you could still game even without connecting your computer, but it's not true. If I have the HD PVR 2 connected to my PS3, I have to have it connected to my computer, the computer booted up, AND the Hauppauge Capture software running to even be able to see the PS3 feed on my TV.

Elgato is probably similar, but you need it connected anyway to get power through the USB.

Hope this helps.

Elgato gaming capture card is used by many youtubers. It will probably last you better because you know what your buying. I got my hdpvr 2 as a present and i still dont use it as much as elgato.
