Question:
Is there a simple map maker I can use for when playing text based games? (Mac)?

I recently got into text based games/interactive fiction. You know the ones where they describe the room, what lies to the north, south, west, etc. Then you have to solve some riddles, choose your own adventure type stuff...

Well, I've been playing a few that have pretty big worlds that have me moving back and forth through the rooms/places. It's pretty easy to get lost unless I write down or draw a map of the place.

I was wondering if there's a simple map-making app out there for Mac that will allow me to make really simple, one dimensional maps, and let me edit part easily (for example if there's an option in one room to go both DOWN and SOUTH, I can make extra room using the map maker so I can add both rooms below). Also, I want to be able to label and add notes to each room, so something like a text box feature would be good.

This sort of map program may be of help to you:

I have not taken a look at it myself, but it appears to be a Mac app for producing simple maps for text-based classics such as Zork. Unfortunately, based on the user comments, it seems to be pretty limited in its capabilities.

I don't think there are going to be many other options out there.

For map making on MUDs and text adventure games, I would probably resort to using a simple paint/drawing program... so you can draw the junctions exactly as they are... NW, SW, SE, etc... and use different colors to represent an "up" or "down" movement. Not an ideal solution, but something that you could possibly work with once you got used to it, and developed your own shorthand for map-making.

And, may I say, I LOVE this area of retro gaming.

If you've never read (or heard the audiobook of) a story called "Ready Player 1", look it up, I think you'd enjoy it.
