Yes, it does continue the story, but only 1 of them will return in your ME2 game, depending on who you choose to save in ME1.

Yes, Mass Effect 2 continues from where Mass Effect 1 left off. It's not Mass Effect 1: Part 2 though, the Mass Effect games are more like a trilogy. :)

no they are not both back. If Ash dies on Virmire she is dead for good same for Kaiden.

Yes it does and as everyone else is saying, the decisions that you make will carry over. Even in Mass Effect 3 you will see the impact of some of the decisions you made back in the first game.

While in ME2 the character that you saved (between Kaidan or Ashley) won't play much of a role, in ME3 they'll be your squadmate.

Whatever you do, keep Wrex alive. He has a significant presence in each game (and even in the Citadel DLC for ME3 which is a sweet farewell to the trilogy), and the character that takes his place should he die in ME1 is not nearly as entertaining. You'll be losing out on a lot of entertaining dialogue.

All your choices in ME1 are imported to ME2, even the little things you thought had no impact will come back in mass effect 2, depending on who you save, ashley/kaiden will be present in ME2

Yes, Mass Effect 2 does continue the plot. It may miss out a few tiny details, but so tiny they wouldn't matter. About the Kaiden and Ashley problem - there should only be one of them left, either random if you haven't played Mass Effect 1, or it'll be who ever you choose to save in Mass Effect 1.

If you start off with ME2, then the default one who lives is the opposite sex of your Shepard.

There is a downloadable interactive comic which allows you to make some of the choices before you start ME2.

ME2 defaults:

1. You never did a single ME1 side mission.

2. You never scanned planets.

3. You didn't save the colony on Feros.

4. Wrex is dead.

5. Arachni queen is dead.

6. The salarian commander on Virmire, Kirrahe, is dead.

7. That big asari ship, Destiny Ascension, is destroyed, so it's not a war asset in ME3.

So, aren't you glad you played ME1 first?
