Question:
Why would some people spend five or six years of their life playing runescape?

I mean, like, play it a little bit every day or with short respites. But, I just don't see how or why the game could be so appealing that people after years of stopping playing the game come back to it or why after five years of playing it, they still never get tired of it and earning skillcapes and making money and slaying dragons and acquiring rare items. Is being a part of runescape like being part of some elite club? I don't quite understand this or the reason for it and these questions I still ponder.

RuneScape and many other MMORPGs are addictive, although people do eventually stop playing them while you are on them and leveling and collecting items it is very addictive.

Not many non-gamers/non-MMORPG fans understand this.

Although playing Runescape for 5-6 years a little every now and then and daily and stuff may seem weird some one who played it alot over 2 years may clock in the same amount of gameplay hours.

Why do people spend 5 or 6 years of their life going to clubs or playing softball or cheerleading. Because it's fun and relaxing. Everyone has a hobby. Some folks enjoy video games. Others play sports. Some go to craft bazaars.

If you don't enjoy Runescape then don't play. If you have a friend that plays then just tell them you played for a bit but the game didn't appeal to you and suggest going to a movie together or something.

I have to laugh at all the people that come here and write "Get a life. Ur fat and dumb" on all the video game questions. They spend all day writing that on all the questions and they think we're the ones without a life?

Perhaps the people that always play runescape have no lives. It's ok to play it every once in a while, but they are very lonely people. They lack a life, that's why they always play runescape. All them people that always play runescape 24/7 are probably fat 30 year old men with diabetes that wear glasses and have to always eat their food while they're playing runescape. They most likely have 3 hours of sleep every day, that's why they probably have so many spots on there face.

But those who only play it sometimes are usually in much better shape. Unlike the 24/7 rs players, these rs players have something called a life. These people don't lack a life, because they probably already have one.

And that is the answer to your question, people who spend 5 or 6 years of their life playing runescape probably han't got a life.

Ahhh... Runescape. Now THOSE were the days. I used to play it all the time, but then it just got boring to me. Never did get that damn woodcutting skillcape. Oh well. For me, I used to play because it was a way for me to kick back from reality and have a little adventure. You know, to sorta escape all the troubles of the world and have a little fun. However, every person varies. Some people just become obsessed with it, others just play it cause its fun. It really depends on the person.

Have you heard of something called an Addictive Personality? Quite a large number of online gamers who enjoy playing runescape for many years at a time, or other games, such as World of Warcraft, have this. It basically means that the person will be more likely to repeat an addictive activity, such as playing a game, because something about that activity (be it a game, alcohol, or drugs or something else) releases a chemical called endorphins into their bloodstream which makes them feel good. And you know us humans, all about the feelgood!

In the example of runescape and Warcraft, I'm under the assumption that Quest completion, leveling up, and achievements achieved are the main culprits. I admit that I myself have an addictive personality, having been stuck in the runescape loop for the past 9 years myself. The only difference is that I get extremely bored of something that I do constantly, so I usually only do that something (AKA runescape) for a couple weeks/months at a time, so as not to burn my self out. This is also why I plan on not drinking alcohol until I'm much older, because I know it would drag me into a never-ending cycle of addiction.

Hope this helped,

Hawk

If you mean like 6 hours per day, then its because they're addicted. The people that talk to that person in real life aren't as fun as the game that they are playing. It isn't just runescape either, many MMORPG's are a stress reliever to people and a chance to get away from everything. I play one particular game but I don't go overboard with it. I usually only play after I finish homework, or if I can't get a ride to go anywhere on the weekend. People don't get tired of it because they don't know what they'd do without it. Addicted people spend hours on these types of games daily and wouldn't know what else to do with their lives. Even if they quit, usually friends would just pressure them to play again and they would out of boredom.

I don't know what runescape is but I guess it's a video game of some sort.

Games are hobbies. Hobbies are FUN. Would you ask a painter why he spends hours every week standing in front of an easel? Or a horseback rider why she spends hours in the saddle?

Video games seem useless but really, if the person is ENJOYING it, isn't that enough?

Hobbies are GOOD things, everyone should have at least one!

Because they think it is fun and they do not let jerks bring them down just because there doing the exact same thing that the jerks are doing, only with something else. It is very addictive and after not playing it, it becomes appealing again. btw, no flamers please, we all know you are just jerks looking for articles about WoW and runescape just to get on and say "Get a life!". Of course what else should we expect from you, what better things are there to do?

what life are you talking about? Spending 5 or 6 years must be saying that they dont have a life...
