I've played a lot of WoW over the years. Guild Wars was okay but what I disliked about it was the limited storyline.

My favourite alternative is Runes of Magic. It's free to play (although the download takes HOURS), it's not as big (in terms of world size) as WoW but it's similar in format, graphics as good as GW, no limited storyline, and some interesting extras.

The only reason I haven't quit WoW and gone totally over to RoM is that my friends won't move. :(

Sorry to say but I tried guild wars and city of heros but neather of them were as good as wow playability wise.

both these games have stupid drawbacks such as if you die you ether lose exp or your toon becomes weaker the more you die so you have to sit around for hours wating for the debuff to ware off.

City of heros/villans other then the EXP drawback drim dieing is an ok game.

I have not tried this one but iv been told Lord of the rings MMO is pretty decent though i dont know the drawbacks , if there are and, to the game

right now WoW playability wise is still the Best MMO out there and not all the people on wow are mean it just depends on the server you are on and wether or not you can actually find a decent guild so that you can actually get into raids and what not.

i dont know the situation of where people were mean to you. but if it was due to say your gear yes people can sound mean but when it comes to raids they do look for well geared people and people who know their class so if you were not quite up to par then people can get a little testy.

you could always wait for a while until the Star Wars MMO comes out and play that though its probably going to be another year before it does at the very least.

It is really difficult to recommend a specific MMO game, because everyone likes something different. Check out http://mmohut.com for a gigantic list of these free mmorpg / mmo games. I use that site to find new games to play. Every week or so I try a new game ;) - It's a lot of fun because I try everything. They have like every single MMORPG categorized nicely with reviews, screenshots, videos and more. Heck they even list the game's system requirements ;). Best part is all the games are free, which rocks.

Or you can just see a huge list of the games with scores, types, etc above.

They list all the big non-download MMORPGs too on their browser game section. I like browser games a lot too =].

Let me know if this helped at all :].
