depends if you mean online or in your friend's parents' basement.
for the former, try WOW, KOTOR, or Oblivion. for the latter try D&D, warmachine, or just straight LARPing.

As someone else pointed out we really need more info to answer this question-
Are you talking a Paper & Pencil RPG, a Computer "RPG", or an online "RPG"?
Are you a total newbie or have you played other RPG's (and if so what type)?
Personally I can help you with P&P Games, some help with computer games, and I despise most Online Games....

Based on personal experience Ultima Online, though dated, is great.
World of Warcraft on the other hand is terrible for role-playing. The problem with WoW is that the game is designed to throw people to the four winds for most of it's game progression, and any group progress needs focus and skill which would only be hindered by role-playing. It's just not conducive. (Not bashing WoW though, been addicted since beta, I just find it has little role-play value.
